Representatives of the Tebu call for greater participation and the protection of rights in the Libyan political process.
Tripoli – A group of Tebu representatives called for greater political participation and representation in decision-making structures during a meeting held on Monday with the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Ms. Stephanie Khoury.
The twelve-member delegation included political, legal, and tribal figures, members of social councils, as well as representatives of youth and women, and civil society activists — a clear expression of the Tebu community’s engagement in efforts to shape Libya’s future.
The participants expressed their concern over the limited representation of the Tebu in political institutions at both the local and national levels.
One of the speakers said, “Our representation is not a privilege but a fundamental right and an integral part of any fair and inclusive political process,” proposing the establishment of an effective communication and coordination mechanism between the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Tebu community.
The participants also emphasized the importance of ensuring the effective participation of cultural components in the constitutional, electoral, and institutional processes, while stressing the need to integrate these components into the national political dialogue.
One of the civil society representatives added, “There must be a clear space for cultural components in Libya. We are asking the United Nations to support us in opening this door.”
Ms. Khoury provided the attendees with a briefing on the political roadmap announced by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ms. Hanna Tetteh, during her briefing to the Security Council on August 21.
Ms. Khoury said, “It is essential that all cultural components have effective participation in the political process. Every Libyan should feel that they are part of the future of this nation.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mr. Mouleh Saleh delivered a speech in the Tebu language, highlighting the richness and diversity of Libya’s cultural fabric.
Ms. Khoury expressed her desire to visit local communities in the south again, to listen directly to their residents and understand their priorities and needs.
